According to my sister:
"I think I could do this all day. I love old album covers and this way of naming a band, an album, and using a photo is really quite interesting. You should try it."
So I checked out her album cover and got excited! That was my first mistake! My second mistake was forgetting that I am a technological moron and that copying and pasting and j-pegging a photo and adding a few words would be like me doing rocket science. Did I ever tell you that I managed to go through all four years of High School with a low "A" average (3.8) and NEVER took a science class? Yeah. That was the 70's, skipping science was small potatoes compared with what the other kids in the Art Dept. were doing. Ahem.
Any who, So I followed the rules and did my best and a week later* here are the results. What I lack in technological skills I evidently make up for in political statements...oy, totally random, not my choice, but you can't beat the interesting commentary/coincidence of the combination!
The rules are here:
1 - Go to "wikipedia." Hit “random”or click
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
2 - Go to "Random quotations"or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.
3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
4 - Use photoshop or similar to put it all together. Post on your blog, facebook or where ever you want.
Go ahead! See what those crazy music industry folk have in mind for your little rock band!
* By "a week later" I mean I actually wrote to Robyn and asked her to walk me through this, which she did, and then did again, and then eventually just has me send it to her so she could fix it and then send it back to me, so that I could finally upload it to blogger. Yes. I am a technological moron.

meme
Be Honest from Jane
Spring has obviously sprung. At least in blogworld. All around us are stories of cleaning, or the lack thereof. Some people hate it, some perople are resigned to it, me I just do it, occasionally. At What about Mom? she's put up a post about home and hearth. And, asking you all to be honest in your answers. I decided to copy it. Sortof like a meme (plagiarism at its finest). heh. (even moreso from me, as I stole this from Robyn! word for word, well except for my answers!) So give it a go.
1. How big is your house? How many people do you have living in it?
About 1400sf. 2 people currently, however we will host the Electrician and his wife the R.N. for a bit until their escrow closes. Also to be noted is that at one time this same house was the home to all of our 5 kids, who shared two rooms and one bathroom.
2. How many hours a day do you spend cleaning?
Depends on the day. Usually about an hour, unless you add up laundry and then it go a bit longer. With just the two of us the cleaning has gone way down.
3. Do you work for money in or out of the home? Do you clean more/less if (now that) you have a paying job?
I am what I like to refer to as a full time volunteer. When I worked outside the home I cleaned considerably less, I was not a good working mom, nope, not at all. I was horrible at it in fact.
4. Are you successful at getting hubs (or wife, my two, dear male readers) or kids (what age?) to help? HOW?
Each member of our family was/is responsible for their own laundry. WE help each other out often by shouting "ANYONE HAVE ANY WHITES (DARKS, TOWELS, etc) THAT NEED TO BE WASHED?" and wait to load them up until all are gathered to make a full load. (When you do your own laundry it gets done to your specific preference, folded your way, ironed if needed.) Dishes were assigned daily, as were other household chores (even when I did not have to work outside the home). We have a philosophy of we all live here, we all need to maintain the house, yard, etc. The "HOW?" part of this began when they were very little toddlers. It was easy then, it was a "priviledge" to help out mommy and daddy. If you weren't a good boy/girl you were not allowed to help. We taught the kids that work is a virtue and also a commandment and responsibility. Some how that worked well for us and the kids cooperated most of the time.
5. Do you clean frantically before guests (your mother-in-law) come?
I used to when the kids were little and the house was a wreck most of the time. As they grew and helped out more, I relaxed. Now the only time I clean like a fury is if I know I will have "certain" people over who I know will judge me in a bad way. That's honest.
6. Does housecleaning/house-messiness/housecleaning-inequity affect your daily contentment?
House cleaning no, the house being a mess yes. I don't like it when the house is a wreck, it literally does affect my mood and if it goes to long I can't handle it.
7. Have you discovered how effective blogging is at procrastinating/blocking out messes?
Blogging definitely effective at keeping me form things that I should be doing, however, if the house gets ugly I have to get it done or I go over the edge.
Now an addendum: I have been asked to go into other people's homes, and also teach classes to groups on how to effectively clean and organize. I am pretty anal when it comes to certain things and when I am working with others I am seriously organinzed. HOWEVER, people assume (incorrectly) that because of this trait, that my house would be immaculate, not so. In fact much the opposite. Most of the time it's controlled caous, a project always in the midst, and who knows what. Living where we do there is always always always dust and it drives me crazy. But, I am still organized, I can find whatever I need immediately (that's the controlled part). Any who. There you go.

service meme
Mark,The Mo'Boy, has tagged me with an interesting meme: To write about a time when I was the recipient of service, about a time when I gave service, and a time when I witnessed service being done by one person to another. Then to ask a few more of you to do the same and to see how far this service meme can go, perhaps to inspire us all to do more.
This meme has taken me a very long time to write. It's a difficult thing for me to write down certain things, some that feel almost sacred in a way. Service is like that for me at times, others just plain ol' fun!
I have been the receiver of service more times that I can possible write about and it humbles me to think that so many have given so much to me. Do I write about the "secret service" I have had, those times when someone gave gently used clothing to our family in time of need, or perhaps the time my sister has come to my aide and spent a couple of days helping me out of a tough situation by cooking up a storm? The fact is, I have so many examples of service that has been given to me and my family that it overwhelms me to think about it!
My mother and father in law come to mind also. It seems to me they were always the first to show up when I needed help with my kids. Those times when I needed to be with one child and leave the rest in their care. Most of the time it was with our first, because of his illness and his unexpected stays in the hospital. There is the service where a dear friend listened to the Spirit and made an extra unscheduled visit one day. That particular afternoon was late spring, warm and perfect for visiting friends. Earlier in the day all of my kids and I had gone to a neighbor's to enjoy their back yard swing set while I chatted with the mom. We walked back home in time for naps. As soon as everyone had been sent to bed the knock at the door brought in my friend Lorraine.
Lorraine had seen me a few days earlier and told me she just felt she needed to come by one more time to check if we needed anything. My usually obedient and constant napper of a six year old kept coming in and buzzing around Loraine like a fly. I kept insisting he go back to bed and he kept being naughty and literally laid down on the floor in front of Lorraine.
She commented on the bruises on the backs of his legs. Large thick deep purple bruises striped his thighs. He looked like he had been hit by a two by four, and hard. (in reality, the weight of his own tiny body, sitting on the swing, caused the bruises on his thighs.) I explained I thought he was low on potassium and had scheduled a visit with the pediatrician and that it was a few days from now. I showed her other smaller bruises that he had collected, on his back, on his arms, all over his tiny frame. I rationalized that he was six and we lived in the desert, rocks, dirt and plenty of opportunities to bang a little body lacking a few nutrients -nothing a couple of bananas wouldn't fix.
She looked me square in the eye and told me to forget the appointment. She didn't want to alarm me but he looked just like her nephew who had just been diagnosed with leukemia. She insisted I take him that afternoon, right away, wake the other kids and get him checked. Her voice told me she wasn't kidding, so I did as she said.
Long story short: It was not leukemia, however it was rare and serious, potentially fatal, incurable for his particular case. His platelets should have been 250 thousand, when we checked in his blood count showed 24 thousand and by 6:30 that night he was down to 12. Our son was bleeding out and would have died that night if I hadn't listened to her. That night turned into a very long and difficult 6 years. Both Lorraine and her husband gave us service all through those 6 years and then some. They supported us in ways that was more than average friendship and an true example of Christ like love.
Service because someone listened and followed through on a prompting.
I remember an older gal in our ward (congregation) who had diabetes and had progressed to the point of her sight being so diminished she could not see clearly enough to give herself injections. There were many of us involved with her care, and my part of the schedule was first thing in the morning. I would wake up and be at her house every morning at 6:30 sharp. First I would test her blood, then make the proper adjustments in her meds, and then help her give herself the injection. Then I would prepare her breakfast while we chatted about the day and her schedule while she ate, recheck the blood and then I would be on my way. I looked forward to this time with her and after a few months she decided that she needed to move to Vegas to be with her family. It was sad to see her go, and really, looking back on that time I wonder who was giving the service to who. I got so much from those early morning sessions that I doubt I gave her more than she gave me.
It's always the same, service becomes fun. Another friend of mine was pregnant and at four months her membrane ruptured and she was flown to Loma Linda University Hospital. She was placed in isolation and monitored for the rest of her pregnancy. Five months hooked up to monitors, unable to even walk around, other than back and forth to the bathroom -with a nurse's help- she laid flat on her back to keep her baby from being born. I had a slew of kids myself and couldn't really do anything for her during the week, so every Sunday until the baby was born I would go to church, then hop in the car and drive an hour to Loma Linda and spend the evening with her. We would laugh and chat and fill each other in on all the local "news". I would sneak her goodies, In-N-Out cheeseburgers or a shake, malt balls (none of which she was supposed to have!), and I decorated her room with streamers and humorous posters and whatever I could do on the cheap. I would ask different people to ride along with me from time to time, and we all had such a great time. That baby finally came, grew up, served a mission and is ready to get married! Good times!
I have a friend, Jann, who was asked to go to the women in a nearby prison and tend to their Spiritual needs. She was given training and a strict outline of what she was allowed and prohibited from doing and saying, and given a specific schedule for visiting. During her service there she listened to the women, she read their eyes and answered their questions. Although she did not condone their reasons for being in the prison she did not judge the women on a personal level. She was able to find the Child of God in each woman, find ways to respect them and see them as God sees them. Listening to her describe her experiences there, with softly cracking voice and tear filled eyes, I know she genuinely loves these women. She became the true representation of Christ for them. I am in awe of her service.
Now it's your turn! I will warn you this is a tough one. It's hard to share these things, but it is inspiring to reread them and rekindle those feelings. Please give it a go! I challenge anyone who reads this. Let me know when you post and I will send folks over to your blog to check it out.
Specifically I am going to challenge:

Name meme
The Pea tagged me for a meme about names and their origins within the family....she wanted me to answer in regard to the Fireman, so here you go!
Name and meaning: Thor Jr. hehe! The meaning is "God's Mercy", "Noble and Bright" Back in our day it was a family tradition to name the first born after the dad, so we did that. Looking back on that we all think this was a huge mistake. Especially now with computers etc. and the whole same name thing gets really funky and it messes up a lot. So yeah, maybe we should have named him Bill, or George, anything but Sue.
Age: at this writing he is 30 years old, at one time he was 1, then 2, then 3, and on and on and on until now he's a big old guy with his own little guy.
Nicknames: The name that everyone knows him by (if they are in the family), a shortened version of his middle name.
Favorite activities: day trippin' with his little Buckaroo and the Beautiful Lady. When he was little he loved doing whatever would raise his adrenalin... same ol' same ol'.
Favorite Foods: Pretty much anything prepared over a grill in front of an ocean, a big pile of rocks, or in the middle of a forest, I imagine. With a side dish of family.
Least favorite foods: hospital fare.
Favorite music: indy, old (meaning really freakishly old early early) country, early jazz and blues, that said he's very eclectic and feels comfy with everything from rap to opera and to R&B, alternative, rock and back again.
Favorite toys: the "beast", I think. (again, those adrenilin inducing tools/machines)
Favorite Books: travel logs, maps, day trip guides, yada yada yada...although he reads all the time, all kinds of things, from politics to time management to religion and cars and surf info.
Favorite item of clothing: new vintage or old vintage, comfy and good looking casual wear. (he's always been a clothes horse)
What makes him happy: feeling well, his wife, little boy, family, his career, his volunteerism.
What makes him sad: the "91", senseless tragedies and abuses.
o.k. Thor Jr. Correct the mistakes!
And in the meantime, I tag BoyMom (pick one of the many!), Rynell (how 'bout sharing about the new little one?), and Robyn (what say ye on the youngest of the Mohichans?)

The really odd meme:
What kind of soap do you have in your bathtub/shower right now?
One bar of French milled soap, Thor's. One each of the following: SoftSoap Pink Grapefruit, Oil of Olay Body Ribbons, Oil of Olay Complete Body Wash, Neutrogena Sesame Body Oil, Homemade Body Sugar Slough, Dove Shampoo, Pantene Shampoo, Pantene Conditioner, Head and Shoulders Shampoo, Biolage Shampoo, Biolage Conditioner. yeah, there's a lot of stuff in there right now. (and I didn't even get into the pumice stones, loofas, or shaving stuff.)
What color or design is on your shower curtain?
Master bath has glass doors and a (needs to be thrown out, faded) creme coloured Brussels Lace valance. Guest/kids bath has a bright white chenille curtain and valance with a clear liner.
What would you change about your living room?
If I had carte blanche I would tear the walls out and reconfigure the whole of it to make it more 'large-family-visiting' friendly. However, that isn't an option, so what I would and probably by the end of the year will do is exchange the living room for the family room. Repaint, declutter, and actually polish the floors!
How many plants are in your home?
Sweet Marie. Too many to count. Seriously. I wanted a 'tropical' look so I have plants literally everywhere! That, and I love fresh flowers, so I usually have an arrangement in the family room and also on the table. This week I have 2 very large arrangements due to a special occasion. My house is crazy with plants right now.
Are the dishes in the dishwasher clean or dirty?
Clean. I tend to turn it on late evening if I have a full load.
Do you drink out of glass or plastic most of the time at home?
Glass. I can not stand plastic! Wanna terrify me? Force me to drink out of tupperware!
Do you have iced tea, made in a pitcher, right now?
No, I never would. I am not a huge fan of grass (or flower or spice or whatever) flavoured water. e-gads! blech!
Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?
No, but it kind of sounds good even though I am freezing!
So, what is in your fridge?
Milk, cream, water, and a bottle of Naked Juice and Vitamin Water. A bowl of home made chicken stock (waiting for dinner!), Diet Dr. Pepper and diet Pepsi -both caffeine free-for Thor. Organic Omega3 eggs. Fresh Euro greens. CELERY!!! (lately I am really eating this stuff). Carrots, mixed peppers. Oranges. Goat cheese, sharp cheddar, and snack cheese wedges. Tortillas. Many condiments both sweet and savory. and, unfortunately leftovers.
What's on top of your refrigerator?
Ugh! I just this last week made a promise to myself to rid the top of the fridge of everything...you caught me! A 'lazy Susan', a large jar of cookie cutters, a floral bowl, and those little glass 'stones' to use in floral arrangements.
White or wheat bread?
Currently a really good multigrain with nuts and whole seeds....really good!
Comet or Soft Scrub?
Neither. Bon Ami for light clean up. Ajax with bleach for the sinks that can handle it, CLR for fiberglass on the fiberglass when it needs it. (which btw, I despise! Bring on the tile or rock or stone or cement...anything but fiberglass!)
Is your bed made now?
yikes, no. Can I use laundry day as an excuse??? I'm not doing laundry, but can I use it as an excuse?
Is your closet organized?
For the most part. We have extremely small closets and very little storage, so the closets get really filled. That said, everything has its' place. I organize by colour, sleeve length, season, and use. I use shoe racks. I have tap lights inside the sliding doors so I can see what's in there in the dark! There are baskets for towels. Specific shelf space for storage items, luggage, shelves for purses, you get the idea.
Can you describe your flashlight?
Our (block's) power goes out pretty much any time we have a storm or strong wind. So we have shake lights in the night stands, a rechargeable in the kitchen, another shaker at the entry. A huge 6volt and camp lantern type flash lights in the hall closet. Every car has a shaker. We have a lot of flash lights. (if they go bad we also have candles and kerosene lanterns!)
If you have a garage, is it cluttered?
Holy Holy. Right now it is full of things for a garage sale. (FEB. 22/23 BE THERE! BE THERE! BE THERE!) Hopefully after that, the garage will be amazing!
I would like to tag: the Middle Hip Sis, the Older Hip Sis, Mustang Sally and Susan! hey, I just wanna see what's in your fridge.

NaBloPoMo Day 20: a meme!
Krishanna is a NaBloPoMo buddy that I have in one of my groups. She's new to my blog and so she wants to get to know me and a few others via a couple of memes. All you regulars know I love spillin' and navel gazin' so, of course, I said "yes". Her memes have a few similarities as some of the ones I did recently, so I thought I try to come up with even more S'mee goodness for you all. Here we go!
Name six guilty pleasures no one would suspect you of having: (I already told you about the fresh food, fresh flowers and chocolate...)
1. Bathing soaps and shampoos. Yeah I like the good stuff. If it doesn't smell a certain way I can't use it. It also has to leave my skin feeling a perfect balance between squeaky clean and still moisturized or I freak.
2. Long, seriously, long HOT showers. Sometimes 2 and 3 times a day. I need to keep my muscles warm or I ache like the mother I am, so I take showers. I don't have a lawn, I don't have pretty trees. I shower. Sue me.
3. I talked about this the other day, but NICE sheets. High thread count. Although I am smart about where and how much I pay. But trust me...my bed is heaven on earth.
4. um. I also like myself some bath sheets instead of jr. high hand towels. I like a bath SHEET, you know those gynormous towels you and two of your cats can wrap up in? Yeah those. I don't do small do "regular" bath towels anymore.
5. Miss Otis may regret, but I do not. I always keep my lunch appointments. I am one of the "ladies who lunch". I am one of a small group of women who volunteered together and we meet once a month to yak it up and eat over a few hours. It destroys the day, but keeps the friendship alive.
6. I don't need to work so I can leave any time to see/visit/help my kids whenever I want. And I do that a lot. I am really really blessed.
Name six guilty pleasures you wish you had the courage/time/money to indulge*:
1. A sewing studio.*
2. A ceramic studio, complete with a kiln.*
3. Welding and metal smithing classes.*
4. A painting studio that was kid friendly and huge.
5. Weekly pedicures.
6. Personal chef and kitchen staff.
* I stole these from Krishanna, however I would have written them anyway! Who knew we had so much in common?
Name six pleasures you once considered guilty but have now either abandoned or made peace with:
1. Being angry. I used to be much angrier than I am now. I accepted that it was o.k. to be angry and then realized how it wasn't going to resolve anything anyway, so I let most of it go. Most of it.
2. My yearly pass to Disneyland. It's o.k. that I have a good time. It's o.k. that I like going there without kids.
3. Expensive shoes. I am old. I deserve shoes that feel good. I am talking shoes that are still only about $60.00, but for me, that may as well be $600.00.
5. Being funky and arsty fartsy. Wearing glasses and or clothes that are not age appropriate. Like jeans or the "old man" rims that make people stare sometimes. I'm quirky...deal.
6. Blogs. I read lots of blogs and always look for new ones. I am still a bit bad about commenting but I am getting better. (I'll keep this one from Krishanna, it's true for me as well.)

computer junk 101 (better make that remedial comp. junk 78 - funky, but it has a nice beat and it's easy to dance to)
Dear Readers,
The following is an exercise in the ridiculous. Allow me to explain. About a week ago Peggy, from "Speak Up For Truth" sent me a "meme". (Hearing an operatic warm up right about now...) Evidently she got it from a friend who sent it to her. This is some kind of e-chair letter for all I can figure out. Peggy seems to be a nice gal, so I thought, "What the hey!" and thought I would try to send it along. This presented a few challenges for the rider of the "e" equivalent of the little bus.
#1. Who is Meme and why does she flit from one place to another and how exactly does she travel????
#2. Meme speaks techno-crat and is asking me about files and other hard questions like, what kind of music do I listen to. C'MON MEME! I AM NOT A SCIENTIST FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!
#3. Meme thinks I have readers and friends here on planet "E". Get real Meme, I just moved here and I haven't met the neighbors yet!
So, being the brilliant learner that I am, I contacted Chronicler over at "Food Chronicles". She is in the dictionary under "Queen of Patience" (although in this case Queen of Patients would work just as well). I hit her up every time I need to figure out how to do the really complicated techno moves, like cut and paste...
She informed me politely that I needed to get to the sending part of Meme (like yesterday) and so do this and then that and then stand under the Blue Moon after eating a jalepeno while holding a lightning rod and then press click. EASY enough. I try. I try again. Then the words everyone loves... "You've Got Mail!" Inside my mailbox is the copy of Meme. (Trust me, she ain't that good looking.) Along with instructions on how to get her into the bus, on the train, essentially, run Meme back to France from whence she came.
Copy. Copy. Copy. (accordion music is playing and I am envisioning the beheading of Marie Antoinette) A phone call is made. Yada, yada, yada, (muffled sounds of laughter in the background) hum-dee-doo, and I try again. Success! I have cut, copied and pasted Meme and sent her over to Chronicler and others! (cue the MLK speech, Free at last! Free at last!)
I get on the computer this morning. "You've Got Mail!" According to Chronicler, Meme was sent to the wrong port and is now being accosted by the Feds on the dock. I ring up Chronicler. Instead of "hello" I hear the roar of laughter on the other end. Fine. I know when I am licked. I know when I am in over my head. I know when I am being mocked!
Chronicler, once again, runs through the drill. She also explains that Meme is indeed French. French for "same" and presumes that someone decided to use this term when sending the same message to many people. (This is why S'mee took ASL instead of French) That and "it's pronounce mem -like men only with another m" -at least she left off the obligatory "idiot!". I gotta love that gal.
So here we are. "Paulie sent it to Peggy who sent it to S'mee" and now I am sending it out there to a bunch of folks and let's see what happens. (If you hear a big -KaBoOm!- it wasn't me. or Meme)
and I quote the following...
"Because Paulie Asked Paulie of The Commons at Paulie World (S'mee says, "Blame him!" stupid Paulie!) tagged me (this would be Peggy) to answer the following questions: (and then it's my turn...)
Total volume of music files on my computer:Would that be the manila ones of Thor's or my Primary folder? Both are stacked and balanced precariously on the printer. What- that doesn't count? Right, like after the above explanation about Meme you want me to do math? Computer math and count files??? What is this? This is just mean now!
The last CD I bought: My #5's CYMO 2005 Season.
Song playing now: nothing, the house is quiet except for someone singing in the shower.
Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me:
1. Oh Divine Redeemer, especially when sung by Constance Jensen
2. I Stand All Amazed
3. The Twelveth of Never, Johnny Mathis
4. You Are So Beautiful, Joe Cocker
5. My Old Addiction, k.d. lang
(but like Peggy says, this is a very hard question, too many choices, and next week this list may change)
YES. I admit to being a total geek music wise. Trust me, I do have some cool music somewhere, but you asked for favorites.
and 6. (see I told you and it's only been a few hours...) There Is Sunshine In My Soul Today - which I have instructed members of my family to sing at my funeral.Five people to whom I'm passing the baton: (With my most humble apologies!)
Food Chronicles because she has been very helpful, that and between she and the "big guy" they are an encyclopedia of music and artists, and obviously the whole gigabite filegumbo computerwhizardry stuff doesn't throw her a bit.
The Golden Road to Samarqand 'cause she is like the coolest person on the planet and will most likely have songs none of us have ever heard.
Kathy, Kathy, and yet another Kathy
--Chronicler called again, said I can't just send this to an e-mail, 'needs to be a blogger...so with that in mind...)
